Trusting the Painting Process: Using Direct Observation and Photography

This five week course will introduce and demonstrate a variety of painting approaches and techniques combining direct observation of the figure and the use of photography as a reference to create a complete painting from start to finish. We will begin with a small figure study painting from a live model. This study will be used to compose a larger painting, which may incorporate photography to create alternative environments for the figure to inhabit. Learn to work with and without the model to create a sense of depth and a unique atmosphere. We will explore our complicated relationship with reality through representation and abstraction, mark making and paint manipulation. Learn to play with figure ground relationships and the balance of different styles within one painting. Trust the painting process and work through any preconceptions to develop a closer sense of what a finished painting may feel like for you.
